What is Mediation?
Mediation is designed to help parties resolve issues without having to involve a court in the decision making process. It can save time and money.
Mediation is becoming increasingly popular as a method for resolving disputes. In addition to saving money, time, and stress, it allows parties' to fashion their own solutions.
Basically, a trained mediator (or co-Mediation Team) acts as an impartial third party and assists in reaching resolution on relevant issues. The mediator serves as a communicator, referee, and problem solver, working to balance all parties' interests and to assist them in reaching fair decisions.
Mediation can be used for a wide range of conflicts, including divorce, neighbor disputes, business, elder decisions, family disputes, and business conflicts, to name a few.
Who are Mediators?
Mediators come from several walks of life, particularly attorneys and mental health professionals. Other professionals who are mediators include Labor Relations professionals, Business professionals, and CPA's. Anyone who has completed mediation training can serve as a mediator.
Why Should I Choose a Mediator from RI Mediators Association?
In Rhode Island, there is NO CERTIFICATION process for mediators, so beware of mediators who claim to be certified.
The Rhode Island Mediators Association is the ONLY organization in the State of Rhode Island that requires any standards for mediators beyond the state of RI requirement of 30 hours basic training to be covered under the confidentiality statute. And, Rhode Island Mediators Association mediators must meet very strict standards.
Our mediators, while independent, are professionals who have banded together to create the Rhode Island Mediators Association, to establish standards of practice that promote excellence through high level training and education and to demonstrate their commitment to providing value to their clients.
Why Should I Choose an Advanced Mediator?
All of the mediators listed with RI Mediators Association have met the 30 hour standard required by the State of Rhode Island's confidentiality statute.
What Can be Mediated?
Almost any conflict can be mediated. Our mediators work in a wide variety of fields. You can find a mediator by clicking on DIRECTORY. We have listed the names, contact information, email addresses and websites of our mediators.

Is Mediation Expensive?
Our mediators are responsible for their own fee structures. Many of our mediators do not require a retainer, that is, a payment up front to provide services. Most mediators charge for each session at the time the session takes place. Be sure to discuss fee and payment arrangements with any of our mediators. Generally, mediation will be cheaper than litigation.
What guarantees does the Rhode Island Mediators Association provide me?
