EVENTS AND TRAININGS IN RHODE ISLAND

ROGER WILLIAMS SCHOOL OF LAW
FAMILY & DIVORCE MEDIATION TRAINING COURSE
40 HOURS
 - WINTER 2012

This forty (40) hour skills development training course is intended to provide lawyers, counselors and others with an understanding of the contexts in which family conflict arises, the various legal and practical issues in play when families disintegrate, and with in-depth training in the skills that a mediator might employ to help the divorcing parties resolve their differences.  The training course exposes the participant to relevant factors and normative approaches used by courts in dividing property, determining child support, custody, visitation, and spousal support among other issues, while recognizing that parties in mediation are empowered to reach their own agreements with the aid of the mediator.  Role playing exercises are used to integrate theory with practice.

Participants successfully completing this training course are issued Certificates of Completion of Family & Divorce Mediation Training.  Rhode Island Attorneys successfully completing the training are also eligible for 20 hours of MCLE credit including 2 hours of ethics credit.

36 HOUR BASIC MEDIATION SKILLS TRAINING

WHAT IS THE BASIC SKILLS MEDIATION TRAINING?

CMCRI’s Basic Skills Mediation Training (BMST) is a highly interactive 35-hour course, taught by experienced mediators and trainers, that provides participants with the fundamentals of the facilitative mediation process. In the “facilitative” model of mediation, a third party mediator aids or assists the parties' own efforts to reach a mutually satisfying outcome. The mediator does not evaluate the merits or make recommendations for the outcome of the case but rather “facilitates” the process and helps the parties to productively resolve their conflict by exploring their interests and options.  This approach is also sometimes referred to as 'interest-based' mediation.

The BMST covers the following areas: Overview of the Mediation Process; Cultural Roles, Personal Responses and Theoretical Approaches to Conflict; Cultural Competence and Assumptions; the Role of the Mediator; Building Trust and Setting the Stage; Active Listening; Identification of Positions and Interests; Reframing and Summarizing Techniques; Setting an Agenda; Agreement Writing; and Ethics and Standards of Practice.  The training is focused on practical skill-building with many group exercises and role-plays.

■ HOW MUCH DOES THE TRAINING COST?

The training costs $675, which includes a $25 materials fee.  CMCRI additionally offers $25 per person discounts to not-for-profit agencies signing up more than one person.  Please call for more information.

■ WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY TRAINING?

Participants who have completed the training can provide confidential mediation services either on their own in the state of Rhode Island, as a volunteer mediator with CMCRI, or both.  Many other states and programs accept mediation certificates from out of state, but each state varies in its requirements. * CMCRI strongly advocates that newly-trained mediators work under the supervision or mentorship of more experienced mediators for a period of time before mediating on their own.

In addition, successful leaders and managers find mediation skills very helpful.  Two important qualities in being a successful leader, manager, or business person are understanding the interests of others and effectively communicating one’s own interests. Mediation Training is an essential stepping-stone in becoming a more skilled leader, problem solver and peace maker.  This training will teach facilitation skills and techniques to enhance communication, conflict resolution, information gathering, perspective-taking, problem-solving, and interest-based negotiating.  Whether a trainee chooses to formally mediate or not, skilled mediators are able to help others get past assumptions, acknowledge difficult and emotional conversation content, and help make communication productive.

CMCRI offers many mediation opportunities both in the courts and in the community, with extensive mentoring, support and feedback for new mediators, and ongoing education opportunities for all mediators.  Whether they opt to formally mediate or not, trainees can expect to exit the course with enhanced conflict resolution skills, including listening and observation skills; self-awareness and self-monitoring skills; the ability to identify issues and help people focus on problem-solving and the process; the ability to reframe and summarize as needed; and the ability to identify and address ethical dilemmas.

The Rhode Island state statute governing mediation requires 30 hours of training to ensure the provision of confidential mediation services.  CMCRI routinely submits its programs for approval to the Rhode Island MCLE commission for CLE credits for Rhode Island attorneys, and to the NASW of Rhode Island for CEU credits for social workers. CMCRI offers training open to the public every Spring and Fall – please call for more information or to be added to our wait list.
